Saveetha School of Engineering attains IET International Accreditation

SIMATS, Chennai, secured the IET’s international Accreditation for 4 of its engineering courses. IET accreditation is an Internationally recognised benchmark, awarded to high quality programmes that provide an ideal preparation for aspiring professional engineers. The IET is one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community and IET accreditation, licensed by the Engineering Council, covers a broad spectrum of Engineering and Technology subjects.  Recognised around the world as an indicator of quality through the Washington and Sydney accords, The IET Accreditation is governed by the International Engineering Alliance (IEA).  Institutions with IET Accredited programmes are eligible to apply for the EUR-ACE label, awarded by European Network for Accreditation of Engineering Education (ENAEE). 

The Outcome of Accreditation Aimed to impact the institution quality processes, faculty engagement & Student learning experience.  In addition to validating the quality of the institution’s programmes, IET Accreditation also provides direct benefits to graduating students. TOPIC: Transdisciplinary Annual Research (Star) Summit 2019

Saveetha Transdisciplinary Annual Research summit 2019 (STAR Summit 2019) Inaugural function was conducted by Saveetha School of Engineering, SIMATS on 23rd April 2019. STAR summit was inaugurated by Chancellor Dr.N.M.Veeraiyan, Vice Chancellor Dr.Rakesh Kumar Sharma and Chief guest being Dr.E.Bhaskaran, Deputy Director(Technical)(EDP), Department of Industries and Commerce, Government of Tamil Nadu., Dr.Fabio Celani, Assistant Professor School of Aerospace Engineering, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. A total of 1425 posters are presented by 3170 students, in which 300 projects are communicated for journal publication. The presentation is assessed by 120 domain experts and peer judges from other institutions.

TOPIC: FDP on Teaching and Learning Process

As a part of the faculty development, Saveetha School of engineering has organized an FDP on teaching and learning process. The speakers were delegates from Curtin University, eminent Institute in Australia catering up to 57% of total students who study engineering in Australia. 

Dr.Brett Kirk, Dean International, Faculty of Science and Engineering focused his address on the teaching process at curtin. Dr. Chris Rawson, Dean Teaching and Learning, Faculty of Science and Engineering presentation has taken the audience to various programs offered at Curtin and also the teaching learning pedagogy. Dr.Tony Lucey, Head, School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering had presented some of the research projects from Curtin, which were relevant and had solutions to advanced industrial/ medical/ecological problems. Dr.Abhijit Mukherjee,Dean International South Asia and Professor, Civil Engineering has also involved in brainstorming session. The session also brainstormed about sparking an ignition in the young minds towards research.

TOPIC: AURA’18 a Theatrical Festival on the Theme Green Rescues

This theatrical festival for a toxic free future was organized by the Department of Science and Humanities, SSE on 16 November, 2018. The motive of the fest was to encourage the journey towards being Green, to share ideas in AURA ’18 through various events like Talentia, Mime the theme, Cut and Paste, Click the theme, Mock up, Bite your biscuit, Creative hands and Paint the theme. The guests of the inaugural ceremony Mr. Mohammed Yusufally - Founder & Managing Director of Mission Twenty Group and Ms. Magdalene Lycia – CEO of Arimugam were honoured and they addressed the gathering. Being Eco-friendly today’s world is becoming very important and it goes far beyond just turning off the light when we are out of room or separating our garbage for recycling. Being green has plenty of going for it: we are helping the planet, we save ourselves money, we become healthier, and we feel better about ourselves by simply going Green!

Topic: ‘Participation of Mrs.Ramya Deepak in Industry Institution Summit‘(IIS)

Industry Institution Summit aimed at bridging the gap between the industry and the academic institutions took place on the 29th of September at Hilton Hotels, Chennai. The summit was planned and organised by IET Chennai Chapter. Mrs. Ramya Deepak, Director, Saveetha School of Engineering (SSE) had the honor of presenting her views as a member of the discussion panel on “Academic Best Practices”.

She explained about the Multiple Interactive Learning Algorithm(MILA), CLAB(classroom & Lab Integration) and the importance of Industrial internships, a pioneering step towards creating a better Engineer. Mrs. Ramya Deepak’s address was received with much appreciation and applause.

TOPIC: Workshop on ‘Recent Trend in Power Electronics and Drives’

Workshop on ‘Recent Trend in Power Electronics and Drives’ was organized by Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering in associate with IET-SSE on 12th September 2018. The training session was handled by Mr.S.Yuvaraj Moorthy, Associate general Manager, Central Technical Marketing – Southern Region, Strategy and Alliances, Global operations, Schneider Electric. The practical sessions was handled by ISPARK Solutions Team Mates.

Mr. S. Yuvaraj Moorthy, explained about the concepts of Drives, IEDS, RTU Technologies and Latest technologies in Electric Field with the help of videos which helped students understand the topic in a better way. Afternoon was a practical session, and was handled by ISPARK solution team mates. The participants discovered more about the Power Electronics and Drives by Etab software.

TOPIC: Inauguration of “Lines and Lattice”

Saveetha, the Gateway of Chennai and the Educational landmark of India, has the superlative conveniences that have been designed to ignite the fire of knowledge among our students. In that way world class Twin auditorium was constructed with extreme standards of the orb. That resulted in “Lines and Lattice”, in Saveetha School of Engineering, a center for World Education in Technology and Inter-disciplines. The Auditoriums with unusual semicircular shape glimpsed with lots of blooming bright lights which was an awesome and splendid show. An unparalleled enthusiasm prevailed among everyone present there.

The Inauguration took place on 16th July 2018. The Chief Guest His Excellency, Antony Lobo Hon. Consul of Spain and Guest of Honor Mr. Manikandan Thangarathnam, Director, Software App Store, Amazon Development Centre were there to extend their happiness and to cut the ribbons. TOPIC: Induction Ceremony of First Year B.E/B.Tech Programme

The induction ceremony for first year students took place on 20th August 2018, in Nalli Arangam, with Chief Guest Dr. Sharmila Anand Founder and Managing Director SEHPL – HealthCare Skills Training Academy and Guest of Honor Mr. Neeraj Sharma, Senior Director, HR, Fourkites. The function was presided by Mrs. Ramya Deepak, Director of Saveetha School of Engineering and Dr. D. Dhanasekaran, Principal of SSE.

As a Director, Mrs. Ramya Deepak thanked all the students for choosing Saveetha as the destiny for their career, which was absolutely a right choice, at her presidential address. She insisted students with three main mantra for life, which says “Decide, Commit and Succeed”. TOPIC: TRIOTON-2k18 – A Symposium by ECE Department

A technical symposium was held on 26 & 27 October, 2018, at Saveetha School of Engineering (SSE), Chennai. It was organized by Electronics and Communication Engineering Department with the coordination of Principal and the Department Head.

Mr. D. Rajendran, Retd GM of HVF, AVADI was invited as the chief guest for the event. Workshop on Python was conducted by Yaswitha, Tirupathi, Dileep and Sk. Amanulla of third Year ECE, and 150 students attended the workshop. Technical Events like Paper presentation, poster presentation, circuit debugging, Line follower, quiz, decoder and Non-Technical events like ADZAP, short Film, Dub smash, Mehandi, Nail art, Mobile gaming, Picture Clue and Beg-Borrow-Steal were also conducted. Participants were from DMI Engineering college, SRK Engineering college, SA Engineering college, Sakthi mariamman Engineering College, Apollo Engineering college. The winners and runners of both technical and non-technical event were awarded with certificates and shields.

TOPIC: 3rd International Conference on Design, Analysis, Manufacturing and Simulation

The 3rd International Conference on Design, Analysis, Manufacturing and Simulation, ICDAMS 2018, actively organized by Departments of Mechanical and Automobile Engineering is intended to provide a common platform and bring together researchers, engineers, scientist and scholars to exchange and share their experiences, new ideas, and research results about all aspects of Mechanical and Automobile Engineering. The conference was overwhelmed with patronage from delegates across the globe. The CD proceedings was released by special guest Mr. M. ArthanariEswaran, and the conference proceeding book was released by Chief Guest Dr. George Gargontopolu. The Journal partners of ICDAMS 2018 are (i) MATEC Web of Conferences Proceedings, (ii) International Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics and (iii) International Journal of Vehicle Structures and Systems (all Scopus Indexed Journals). Eventually ICDAMS 2018 had attracted 368 papers from 11 countries namely New Zealand, Russia, Lithuania, Bahrain, Botswana, Egypt, Malaysia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Indonesia and India. Out of which 180 papers were scrutinised for Oral Presentation by our technical committee. Totally 15 technical sessions were held during the two days conference with 15 session chair persons judging the participants.

Visit from Australian National University

Sue Cossetto, Sub Dean (Students Experience) from Australian National University visited Saveetha School of Engineering and delivered a guest lecture on the topic “Current research in biotechnology and explore opportunities for food security and disease prevention”. The essence of her talk was techniques involved in improving the rate of DNA Sequencing, gain transferrable skills of DNA. She also emphasized on study options like Astronomy & Astrophysics, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Environment and Sustainability, Physics and Engineering, Psychology, Mathematical Sciences, Science Communication. Students of SSE can avail one semester abroad program that aids their career growth, to choose the study options.

Mr. Inbavijayan is an arbitration coordinator for great personalities like Mr.K.Venkataswamy, former Supreme Court Judge. He is the core founder and former secretary for the council for national and International Commercial Arbitration.

         His talk was on 'Engineering Professionals on Dispute Management'. The students were inspired by his talk as it was relatively a new area to them. He significantly concentrated on engineering professionals dealing with Conflict, Dispute and Disagreement

TOPIC: Conference on Recent Trends in Electronics, Computing and Communication Engineering- ICRTECC-19

The first international conference on Recent Trends in Electronics, Computing and Communication Engineering- ICRTECC-19 was organized by the department of Electronics and Communication Engineering in association with Sapienza Unversity on 25 th and 26 th April, 2019. Prof. Dr.Paolo Teofilatto, Prof Dr.Febio Celani from Sapienza University, Rome and Dr. Ravi Shankaran Dhesingh from Madras University inaugurated the conference. The conference received 469 papers out of which 211 have been scrutinized to be technically qualified. This includes 3 international papers, 13 from others states like Kerala, Karnataka, Telagana, Maharastra. The remaining 198 papers from various research scholars and students of Tamilnadu.

Le-Incasso 2019 was conducted by IET-SSE On campus group, Saveetha School of Engineering, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences on 22nd to 24th April 2019. Le-incasso 2019 had three workshops, Technical Events and Non Technical events. Three workshops are delivered by Scifi laboratories, Glosys technologies and Live Wire on three days which provides technical knowledge, hands-on skill etc.

Session 1: Non-stick Skin Anti adhesive strategies as alternatives for antimicrobial therapy by Dr Lynda Patridge from the University of Sheffield, UK. Session 2: Research and developments in Bio surfactants and introduce of synthetic biology to improve Microbial processes by Dr Paattanathu Rahman from the University of Portsmouth ,UK Faculties from SSE, Students and faculties from outside college also attended the event.

Mr. Jaijash Tatia who is a co-founder of Stucred – a disruptive student lending app gave talk on Entrepreneurship and empowerment Mr. R. Natarajan MD, EGS Computer India Private Ltd gave talk on Innovation and Entrepreneurship Getting an intensive exposure to a topic through presentations and discussions led by multiple experts is what makes a student’s career a valuable one. Students get a chance to debate issues related to the field and exchange perspectives. This acts as a motivational factor to achieve goals.

One day National Workshop on research scopes in fluid mechanics and heat transfer was organized by Department of Science and Humanities, Division of Mathematics on 19 November, 2018. Eminent professors, Dr. Dr. N. LAKSHMI NARASIMHAN M.S., Ph.D , Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Dr. I. JAYAKARAN AMALRAJ, M.Sc., M.Phil., Ph.D, Department of Mathematics from SSN College of Engineering delivered lecture on Research Methodology and scopes in fluid mechanics respectively. The purpose of this workshop is to illustrate some of the exciting activities currently underway in various areas of Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer, and to bring forth the broad range of ideas, challenges and applications which permeate the field.

TOPIC: Faculty Industrial visit to “Precision Machine & Auto Components (P) Ltd (PMAC)

An Industrial visit to “Precision Machine & Auto Components (P) Ltd (PMAC), was organized by the Mechanical Department of SSE on 29th September, 2018. All Mechanical faculty members visited the company premise, to interact with the industry people to understand latest trends in production & manufacturing methods, current market scenarios, most demanding technologies, criteria for selection etc.

Chairman Sri. K. Balasubramanian, PMAC Pvt.,Ltd. conducted a very informative session on the origin and practices of the company and gave a motivational speech on improving teaching methods.After the session the plant head Mr Vijaya Ragavan briefed about the plant layout and operation methodologies. He explained about various CNC machines under operations; each machines costing between 2.5 and 9 crores.

TOPIC: Inauguration of Saveetha Engineering Industries

Mr. Ponnuswami, chairman CII inaugurated Saveetha Engineering Industries (SEI), and industry within the institute. This facility, first of its kind in India, has been unveiled in the campus of Saveetha School of Engineering on 3rd of August, 2018. The facility boasts of two advanced CNC machines with an investment of about rupees one crore. Saveetha University has been in the forefront for delivering the best education in engineering and medical fields over the past 30 years.

Dr. N. M. Veeraiyan, honorable Chancellor of SIMATS has opined that in order for a medical student to become a doctor, a hospital experience is mandatory while he is in the medical college. Similar experience has to be extended to the engineering graduates. Saveetha Engineering Industries is a unique facility that will create opportunity for the students to have hands-on experience in live production. The students will be able to work in internship or part time and earn while they learn.

TOPIC: SQL Hackathon Competition 2018

Dr. T. Ruso, Mrs. T. Devi, and Mrs. N. Deepa have conducted the competition on SQL Hackathon 2018 on 4th of August 2018, at CISCO Laboratory, SSE. Totally 80 students across Tamil Nadu have registered for the competition. Out of 80, 63 students were shortlisted based on CGPA. There were two levels of screening.

The first level, students were asked basic questions like like create, delete, select and update queries against records and tables. 45 students among 63 students cleared the first level. In the second level screening students were asked to develop a Graphical User Interface for Executing all types of queries using DHTML, PHP and MySQL. Among 45, 2 students from SSE successfully completed the GUI.

Nirmala, coordinated the contest under the guidance of HOD of CSE&IT Dr.S.Chockalingam. Totally 180 students have registered for the contest out of which 79 were external participants. College of Engineering  Guindy, Anna University, IFET College of Engineering, Villupuram, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, Saveetha Engineering College, VIT Chennai, Velammal Engineering College surapet Chennai, Dhanalakshmi College of Engineering, St. Peters college of Engineering and Technology were also participants of the contest.

Prize winners for python contest: First prize - M. Giridhara Rao, final year ECE/SSE. Second prize - J. Balaji, 3rd year CSE/SVCE.  Prize winners for C Programming contest:  First prize - K. Swetha, 2nd year CSE/SSE, second prize - Swarnim Yaduka, 2nd year CSE/SRM. The winners were honored with shield and certificates by Principal of Saveetha School of Engineering (SSE) Dr.Dhanasekaran.

TOPIC: “INTERNSHIP” - A Career Catcher

It is a 15 day internship exposure for the first and second year students of Mechanical department to University Putra Malaysia. This is the first internship with University Putra Malaysia which paves way for the future endeavours. Other than knowing technical aspects of a University, team coordination, leadership quality, owning responsibilities are some of the concepts that inculcates within us in a natural way, which an academic syllabus does not possess.

The internship included the visit of INTROP (Institute of Tropical Forestry & Forest Product), which has advanced lab materials like injection molding machines and Faculty of Forestry, where they maintain tress and other natural resources.

At INTROP students had many guest lectures which includes topics like Automotive application and categories of paper products, Nanocellulose and CNF, Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Thermal Mechanical Analyzer(TMA), Thermal Gravimeter Analyzer(TGA).

Students also had an IV to UniKL (University KualaLumpur) Malaysian institute of Aviation Technology MIAT international, to know about monolithic CRPF and thermoplastic application and the Engine of the Airbus A380. On the whole this internship helps to gain valuable experience and accomplishments to add to the resume and enhance the application to graduate school.

TOPIC: Challenges and Opportunities in Development of Sustainable

“The workshop aims at the conversion of energy source to energy convention”, stated by Dr.P.Kanagavel, Director, NIWE, Chennai at the keynote address on the first day of two days’ workshop held on 27th and 28th February.The energy we use is in the form of fossil fuel which spoils nature thereby increasing global warming and there arises the need for energy transition. He mainly focused on different energy conversion technologies such as solar, biomass, wind and coal. Mr.K. Boopathi Additional Director / Head (WRA), National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE), Dr. V.Rajini, Professor EEE SSN College of Engineering Prof. Srinivas Reddy, IIT Madras, Dr. D. Ruben Sudhakar, NIT Karnataka were other eminent guests who made the two day’s workshop to be a grand successful event.

TOPIC: Entrepreneurism and its Essentialities

     He has seven years of experience in psychology, 12 years of experience in learning and development and 16 years of experience in running successful businesses. He is the founder and senior consultant of the consulting company "Athenus Centre for excellence".  

    His novel approach encouraged the students and he motivated them on becoming successful entrepreneurs with available resources.

TOPIC: National Level Workshop on Computational Fluid Dynamics

It is a one day National Level Workshop by Mechanical and Automobile department with an intention to provide hands on training on Ansys software trained by one of the resource person Dr. R. Manimaran from VIT, Chennai. Ansys software is used to design products and semiconductors, as well as to create simulations that test a product’s durability, temperature distribution, fluid movements, and electromagnetic properties.

The other resource person Dr. Christopher from SSE discussed the applications and relevance of CFD in modern day research and scope of the tool. He gave a detailed lecture on CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), which involves *History of Fluid Mechanics *Process involved in CFD *Governing Equation for flow dynamics *Benefits and Uses of CFD Analysis *Application of CFD

GUEST LECTURE ON TOPIC: ‘BIG DATA ON CLOUD’

A guest lecture on the topic ‘BIG DATA ON CLOUD’ was organized for the II year CSE students of Saveetha School of Engineering on 09/05/18. Cloud computing is the recent area in Computer Science field. Faculty members of CSE Department named Dr.G.Charlyn Pushpa Latha, Dr. S. Magesh, Dr.Sathish Kumar and Ms. SV. Shribharathi coordinated the event. Mr. Praveen Kumar Rajendran, Junior Automation Analyst, CTS, Chennai delivered lecture on the topic ‘Big Data on Cloud’. Mr. Praveen Kumar Rajendran focused on the important challenges of cloud computing. He also discussed on the recent technologies involved with solving the cloud computing challenges. The research areas for cloud computing were also discussed in this lecture. Around 100 students from II CSE participated in the guest lecture. The students were very well motivated to include cloud computing area for their final year projects. At the end of the talk, questionnaire session was conducted. This guest lecture was a really a kick start for our department students who wish to do their final year projects in cloud computing area.

COMPETITION ON INTERACTIVE WEBSITE DESIGN REPORT

"Learning and educating gets its shape when guided in the right path”. This can be achieved by conducting competitions which is a powerful tool in teaching process. Competitors keep you active and dynamic. Dr.T.Ruso, V.Parthiban, Ms.A.K.Reshmy, C.Bharathi and S.K.Kiruthiga, Teaching faculties of CSE Department initiated and conducted a competition on Interactive Website Design. Among 35 registered students from I st year and II nd year CSE 10 participated. Students were asked to develop a department website with user friendly. They used HTML, CSS, DHTML, PHP and MySQL for developing the website. P. Vignesh, I CSE (172.18.35.113/vignesh.html) was awarded first prize and Nanda Sai Kumar, II CSE(172.18.35.113/nanda.html) was awarded second prize.
